Match Preview - Liverpool Raptors

The Gryphons face the Liverpool Raptors on the road in their penultimate game (and final away game) of the regular season. It will be the first ever meeting between the two sides, the Raptors only participating in their second year of BUCS American Football this season.

After a blistering start in which the Raptors held top spot over the Christmas break after victories over Edge Hill, Chester and Bradford, the last couple of weeks has seen Liverpool crash back down to Earth with back to back losses, 6-0 in overtime to the Keele Crusaders, and 8-0 to Bangor last weekend. These results mean it’s now unlikely (but not impossible) the Raptors will manage to claim the division title, but they will not want to hand the title to Leeds on their own turf.

The Gryphons kept up their own winning ways last week with a 50-14 victory over the Bradford Bears, moving the team’s overall record for the season to 4-0 and the team's focus this weekend will be solely on keeping up their 100% record for the season against one of the division's toughest opponents.

The game sees a matchup between the best offence in the league versus the best defence, Leeds scoring at a rate of 38.5 points a game (including a game called at half time versus the Vikings), and Liverpool only conceding 14 points in 5 games this season (2.8 points per game). So a low scoring game is probably expected, but also a contest that has the potential to be one of the best this season.
