Match Preview - Bradford Bears

Sunday sees the return to BUCS action for the Gryphons and a matchup against a familiar foe in the form of our West Yorkshire neighbours, the Bradford Bears.

As the Celtics, the Bears defeated Leeds on both occasions the sides played each other last season, the home fixture resulting in a heartbreaking late loss, and the reverse seeing the Celtics lead 12-0 at half time before 28 second half Bears points gave Bradford a 28-12 victory.

Many many things have changed since then however, and the Gryphons this season look a different force to the Celtics of last. Victories over Chester, Bangor and Edge Hill prior to Christmas have seen Leeds top of the table going into this weekend’s fixture, in large part due to an offensive transformation that has seen the team have the 2nd most points per game of any team in the entire 6 division, 3rd tier of BUCS American Football, second to only the Coventry Jets of the 2A Midlands (35.33 ppg to the Gryphon’s 34.67).

Bradford however will prove to be stern opposition, they currently sit on a 2-1 record in 4th place in the division, however their only defeat was when a severely depleted Bears side took on the Liverpool Raptors in week 2 of the season, and when you consider their other non-personnel troubled fixtures, they’ve recorded two impressive victories over Chester and the defensively talented Keele Crusaders.

All bets are on another close fought fixture in this hotly contested 2A North division, and in this matchup of two offences that know how to put points on the board, it could be decided by which defence stands up and delivers on the day.
